Ching Cheng is a Senior Clinical Psychologist with over a decade’s worth of experience working at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). During her time in IMH, Ching Cheng has worked extensively with patients suffering from a wide spectrum of mental health conditions in a variety of community, inpatient, and outpatient settings. Her commitment to clinical excellence and professionalism is exemplified by her receiving the prestigious Sayang Award from the IMH and the Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP) scholarship to pursue her postgraduate studies.
Ching Cheng specialises in working with individuals and couples using an emotion-focused approach. She believes in the transformative power of emotions and is committed to guiding clients toward productive engagement with their feelings. This is also reflected in her work with couples as she helps partners improve their communication and interaction patterns, recover from relationship crises, reconnect, and strengthen their emotional bond. Her therapeutic style is gentle, and she is respectful in facilitating deep emotional curiosity and exploration.
Trained by acclaimed EFT founder Professor Leslie Greenberg, Ching Cheng is one of the first few psychologists in Singapore who is a certified Emotion Focused Therapy (Level C; EFT) therapist. She continues to contribute to the field by facilitating EFT certification training workshops. In addition to EFT, she is also competent in a myriad of therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, which she integrates according to the needs of her clients.
Proficient in both English and Mandarin, Ching Cheng is able to tune into her clients’ anxious and depressive concerns with much care and sensitivity. She is passionate about supporting individuals with emotional and interpersonal difficulties by helping them develop an awareness and understanding of their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours, creating new meanings and perspectives, as well as learning more adaptive ways of meeting their needs. She is invigorated by the deep human connection in her therapy sessions and strives to be fully present with her clients as they journey towards personal growth and leading a fulfilling life.
Apart from providing psychotherapy, Ching Cheng is dedicated to nurturing the growth of mental health professionals. She conducted training workshops for community organisations and provided clinical supervision to psychologists throughout her career.
In her free time, Ching Cheng seeks connection with her body, people, and nature through exercising, spending time outdoors with her children, and travelling.
