Brenda completed her postgraduate clinical training in Sydney, Australia, during which, she worked in various settings including the Black Dog Institute and the Anxiety Treatment and Research Unit at Westmead Hospital. Upon returning to Singapore, she spent many years providing psychotherapy and conducting psychological assessments with adults at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).
She has a breadth of experience having been placed in various contexts such as community, forensic, outpatient and inpatient settings over a span of more than a decade. She also has extensive experience working with individuals with mood and anxiety difficulties having been part of specialist mood and anxiety services in Singapore and Australia. In particular, she was part of the Mood Disorders Unit, a specialist multidisciplinary team at IMH, focusing on the treatment of mood disorders, in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Taking her prior experience in group psychotherapy in Australia, she co-developed a short term group psychotherapy treatment for individuals with co-occurring mood and anxiety disorders where the treatment outcomes were presented as a poster at an international conference for mood disorders.
A firm believer of education and mental health literacy, she has conducted trainings for General Practitioners, workshops for corporate companies, and spoke at public forums on issues relating to mental health. In addition, she has provided clinical supervision to clinical psychologists and students completing their postgraduate degree in clinical psychology and continues to do so at The Psychology Practice.
Whilst Brenda has worked with individuals with varied difficulties ranging from relationship issues to characteristical problems and suicidal behaviours, she has a strong interest in working with individuals with anxiety and mood difficulties (including Bipolar disorder, co-occurring and/or recurring anxiety and mood difficulties), as well as relational trauma.
Known for her personable, nurturing and exploratory approach, Brenda works sensitively and deeply with her clients to facilitate deeper self understanding and resolution of the difficulties they bring into therapy. Trained in various therapy modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy, mindfulness-based approaches and group psychotherapy, she leans towards emotions focused work and making sense of significant life experiences and relational patterns in her individual and group work with her clients. Beyond theoretical knowledge and labels, her experience over the years taught her the importance of listening with curiosity, and meeting her clients where they are at session to session.
Outside of therapy, Brenda is trained to teach yoga and finds nourishment in listening to her body and learning to meet herself where she is at on the mat. She also enjoys coffee, cuddling her dog, a good poem, and unhurried walks amongst greenery.
